HP to ship lots of notebooks in 2011

HP will ship up to 48 million notebooks in 2011

HP is the biggest computer firm in the world and has some big plans for 2011 with the year just getting underway. DigiTimes reports that HP plans to sell in the range of 45 to 48 million notebooks this year. That is a LOT of notebook computers. The news comes from Taiwanese ODMs that are making the machines for HP according to DigiTimes.

The same sources say that HP took delivery of 10 million notebooks in Q4 2010 and had total notebook shipments of 39 million in 2010. That means HP is looking to ship about 9 million more notebooks in 2011 than it did in 2010.
I wonder how many tablets HP plans to sell in 2011. The company has many offerings up its sleeves and with a lot of notebook makers looking away from the netbook market I am sure HP will be replacing netbooks with tablets during the year.

Touch Mouse ready for Windows 7 after two long years

Touch Mouse ready for Windows 7 after two long years

More than two years of hard work, countless prototypes, and intense collaboration with team members around the globe are just a few of the things that went into the creation of the Microsoft Touch Mouse, a new device created exclusively for Windows 7 that was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

I’m Hrvoje Benko, one of the researchers behind the new Touch Mouse and I actually work for Microsoft Research. This mouse started as a research project back in 2008, mostly as a brainchild of my colleagues Dan Rosenfeld, Shahram Izadi, Nicolas Villar, John Helmes and me. Back at the start, we were all interested in the idea of merging the precision and pointing benefits of standard mice with the rich interactions that we had with multitouch devices, such as Surface, and wanted to see if we could bring multitouch interactions to the desktop without losing the benefits of interacting with the keyboard or the mouse.
So over the next year we worked on several hardware prototypes and many application scenarios in what became known as the “Mouse 2.0” project. You may have heard about it before – we showed five prototypes publicly in October 2009, and ultimately settled on the “Cap Mouse” (image at left) to develop into a consumer product. We chose the Cap Mouse for many technical and design reasons, but mostly because it allowed for flexibility in the design of a wireless device, with rich multitouch gestures, while still having a familiar form factor for people to grip their mouse and easily point and click. We worked in close collaboration with the Hardware team and the Cambridge Innovation Development team to develop a new multitouch mouse for .
Touch Mouse ready for Windows 7 after two long years
The mouse you see today is the best input device for Windows 7. It does everything you’re used to doing with a mouse, but also adds gestures with one, two or three fingers. The gestures work like this:
One Finger lets you manage the content of a document or webpage – moving one finger lets you precisely scroll in any direction and hyperscroll through long documents with a quick flick of your finger, while using your thumb lets you move back/forward easily through your internet browser.
Two Fingers lets you manage multiple windows by maximizing, minimizing, restoring, and snapping them side-by-side.
Three Fingers lets you navigate the whole desktop – three fingers up to display all of your open windows for easy task switching or three fingers down for clearing the desktop entirely.
Here is a video to demonstrate just how this works – take a look:

Starbucks made big news last year when it became the largest chain store in the country to allow customers to pay at the register with their iPhone.

Here's how it works. Simply take any Starbucks gift card you've ever received - or get a new one at any Starbucks store - and then register that card online. That card then becomes your primary source of payment for all your Starbucks transactions.

Online, you can use a credit card to refill your Starbucks card. You can even have it set to auto-refill after it dips below a certain amount.

Then, download the Starbucks iPhone app. When you go to your neighborhood Starbucks, simply load the app, click "touch to pay," and then scan the phone at a custom scanner at the register. The purchase will be deducted from your Starbucks gift card.

The coffee shop behemoth has been trying to avoid paying costly credit card fees for individual cups of coffee by encouraging regular customers to go with the Starbucks gift card program. Customers earn reward points if they pay for coffee with a gift card instead of a credit card, and the points can be used for free drinks.

Clearly, Starbucks is very forward-thinking in its payment processing. By rolling out mobile payments to more than 6700 stores, it is far and away the leader in such technology.

The company is also working on an Android app, but for now only people with an iPhone or iPod Touch are able to try it.

Current Starbucks locations that already offer the mobile pay system are in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and throughout its chain of Target locations.

Less Than One Half Of One Percent Of Android Users Have 2.3

0.4% are running the newest version

Less Than One Half Of One Percent Of Android Users Have 2.3

Google has just posted the latest numbers about its Android owners, showing that more than half are now up to version 2.2 but there's a lot to be done before people start getting upgraded to 2.3.
Here's the rundown:

Android 2.3 - 0.4%
Android 2.2 - 51.8%
Android 2.1 - 35.2%
Android 1.6 - 7.9%
Android 1.5 - 4.7%
< Android 1.5 - 0.0%

To date, only two phones have Android 2.3 available - the Nexus One and the Nexus S. The former is the phone developed internally by Google, which sold terribly, and the latter is the most recent Android phone that hasn't been on the market long enough to reach serious penetration levels.

The good news is that the majority of users are now running version 2.2, which is considered to be the biggest update to the operating system to date.

However, 35.2% of Android owners stuck with an older version is still a pretty high number. What's worse are allegations that Samsung has been blocking mobile carriers from releasing over-the-air updates to Android 2.2, because it wants owners of its phones to have to buy a new handset to get the better version of Android.

Samsung hasn't admitted it is doing that, but it hasn't denied the allegations either.

Nevertheless, eyes are on Android 2.3 now, and no one is talking about when other phones might get that upgrade. Many are still just now getting used to 2.2.

LG Ally, Samsung Acclaim Finally Go To Android 2.2

LG Ally, Samsung Acclaim Finally Go To Android 2.2
There's finally light at the end of the tunnel for Android users with an Acclaim or Ally smartphone, as they have finally gone to the future with Android version 2.2.
The update comes some eight months after Android 2.2 was first announced, and released to the original Google phone, the Nexus One.

Since then, all of the "Droid" family of phones from Verizon have been upgraded as well as numerous models from HTC and Motorola. However, many Android customers are still in the dark with outdated versions of Android, meaning they can't run Flash content on their mobile browser and cannot use their phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for their laptop or other devices.

It almost seemed as if nobody was upgrading older Android phones anymore, but this news is promising.

The update comes as some have begun to question the delays, especially when it comes to Samsung. There are reports that Samsung has been stepping in and blocking upgrades to the newest Android platform, in hopes of getting current customers to go out and buy new smartphones that have Android 2.2 or 2.3 already pre-installed.

It's good to see Samsung as one of the companies involved in the latest update, but there are still several in its Galaxy S portfolio that are running Android 2.1. Samsung had promised to bring version 2.2 to all of its high-end Android devices, but so far has failed to live up to that expectation.

LG's Glasses-Free 3D Phone Is On The Way

LG's Glasses-Free 3D Phone Is On The Way
The 3D world may be hitting a bump, but it looks like companies are still all over it with new innovations and ideas. LG is working on its part, which will bring the novelty of glasses-free 3D to smartphones.

The technology was teased at CES earlier this month but no official product announcements were made.

Word on the street now is that LG is in fact seriously planning a handset that would incorporate the latest 3D technology, and is going to announce it at the Mobile World Congress show next month.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in the adoption to 3D TVs last year was that people hate the idea of buying 3D glasses, especially when they cost $150 to $200 like the current set of active shutter glasses.

It's proving to be a much bigger stumbling block than the TV manufacturers expected. They all thought consumers would get over it once they saw how amazing the picture is with a stereoscopic 3D set.

In reality, though, 3D TV sales last year fell far below expectations and the companies involved in the race to 3D are now rapidly turning to other solutions.

LG also has 3D TVs on the market, but they require the expensive glasses just like most of the others. It didn't announce anything major on that front at CES either.

If its glasses-free 3D smartphone proves to be a success, though, there's no doubt it will want to take that over to its TV business as well.

Slime moulds bet the farm on survival

Dictyostelium discoideum fruiting bodies containing spores and bacteria, ready for pastures new (Image: Scott Solomon)

SLIME moulds have added another skill to their impressive resumé: they practise a primitive form of farming.
Slime moulds - or social amoebas, as biologists now prefer to call them - have been shown to find the shortest route through mazes and pick the most nutritious food from a buffet. These are impressive feats for an organism that lives most of its life as single cells, grazing on bacteria. When food is scarce, the amoebas clump together to migrate to better feeding grounds, and reproduce by forming a capsule full of spores.
While working with several wild strains of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, Debra Brock of Rice University in Houston, Texas, noticed that a third of the strains always packaged bacteria along with their spores in the capsule. This means they can "seed" a food crop when they colonise a new habitat. These strains - which Brock calls "farmers" - even stop feeding before all the bacteria are gone, to ensure there are some left to store as seed. In contrast, the "non-farmers" keep feeding to the bitter end, leaving no bacteria to package.
To see whether the farmers benefit from the practice, Brock and her colleagues sowed spores from farming and non-farming amoebas onto sterile Petri dishes. Sure enough, the farmers' stored crop gave them a head start, and they outgrew non-farmers. Farmers even beat non-farmers on Petri dishes inoculated with natural soil bacteria, which suggests that the bacteria they store are better food (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/ nature09668). "It's the same as humans," says Brock. "We grow crops, but we aren't going to go out and eat the leaves that we find naturally."
With no evidence that the amoebas weed or fertilise their crop, the interaction might be better termed husbandry rather than farming, says Jacobus Boomsma at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Nevertheless, its presence in some strains and not others will let us study the evolutionary origins of the behaviour.

Can Apple Find More Hits Without Its Tastemaker?

Shortly before the iPad tablet went on sale last year, Steven P. Jobs showed off Apple’s latest creation to a small group of journalists. One asked what consumer and market research Apple had done to guide the development of the new product.
None,” Mr. Jobs replied. “It isn’t the consumers’ job to know what they want.”
For years, and across a career, knowing what consumers want has been the self-appointed task of Mr. Jobs, Apple’s charismatic co-founder. Though he has not always been right, his string of successes at Apple is uncanny. His biggest user-pleasing hits include the Macintosh, the iMac, iBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
But as he takes a medical leave of absence, announced on Monday, the question is: Without him at the helm, can Apple continue its streak of innovation, particularly in an industry where rapid-fire product cycles can make today’s leader tomorrow’s laggard?
There is no near-term danger. Apple’s surging sales and profits have made it the world’s most valuable technology company, surpassing Microsoft last year. Apple reported on Tuesday that its profits and sales jumped more than 70 percent in the fourth quarter, exceeding high expectations.
Apple is on a roll, with new models of products in the pipeline. Yet there would be concern, analysts say, if Mr. Jobs does not return full-time to the company, given his unique role in shaping Apple’s products.
“Steve Jobs has this extraordinary ability to see into the future and instinctively see what people want,” said Michael A. Cusumano, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. “He’s done that consistently, in a way no one else has.”
Mr. Jobs, by all accounts, relies on intuition and his own sense of taste, in decisions ranging from hiring to matters of product design. “Steve is one of the most instinctive people I know,” observed Michael Hawley, a computer scientist at M.I.T. who worked for Mr. Jobs at Next, a pioneering but commercially unsuccessful computer company. That was during the period after 1985, when Mr. Jobs left Apple; he returned in 1997.
As the final arbiter on product decisions, Mr. Jobs, colleagues say, is uncompromising. Prototypes and early working products are produced and constantly refined. They are shown not to focus groups or other outsiders, but to Mr. Jobs and a few members of his team.
Three iPhone prototypes were completed over the course of a year. The first two were tossed out, said a former Apple manager, while the third passed muster. The product shipped in June 2007. The iPad tablet, at Mr. Jobs’s insistence, relies on only touch-screen navigation — even though industry analysts said business users, in particular, would want a stylus.
With the iPad tablet, Apple jump-started a product category. But with the iPod (a music and media player) and iPhone (smartphone), Apple moved into markets with many millions of users using rival products, but he gave consumers a much improved experience.
“These are seeing-around-the-corner innovations,” said John Kao, an innovation consultant to corporations and governments. “Steve Jobs is totally tuned into what consumers want. But these are not the kind of breakthroughs that market research, where you are asking people’s opinions, really help you make.”
Regis McKenna, a Silicon Valley investor and marketing consultant, said employees at Apple stores provide the company with a powerful window into user habits and needs, even if it is not conventional market research.
“Steve visits the Apple store in Palo Alto frequently,” said Mr. McKenna, a former consultant to Apple.
The design decisions made by Mr. Jobs, Mr. McKenna said, are informed by his grasp of users’ desires, technology trends and popular culture. In the end, he added, Apple products also reflect Mr. Jobs’s personality.
“Steve’s a cool guy and he designs cool products,” Mr. McKenna said.
Such skills, analysts say, cannot be easily replaced. “There are lots of creative ideas in any good company, but ultimately choices have to be made,” said David B. Yoffie, a professor at the Harvard Business School. “Steve Jobs has made great choices and then refined those. That’s a real art, not a science.”
Mr. Jobs prides himself on being a leader more than a manager. An important part of his leadership ethos, he has said, is to select lieutenants that share his persistence and passion for the business.
And the people he has recruited have given him plenty of help since he returned to Apple in 1997. During his medical leave, Apple will be led by Timothy D. Cook, the chief operating officer, who Mr. Jobs recruited from Compaq in 1998. Mr. Cook stood in for him during an earlier absence.
Mr. Jobs, who has battled pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant a year and a half ago, has taken two previous leaves of absence.
“This is a guy who has wrestled the angels to a stop before,” said Paul Saffo, a managing director of Discern Analytics, a research firm. “His most lasting creation is the company, not individual products, and you have to believe he has done everything he can to ensure Apple will have a long life.”
In a conversation years ago, Mr. Jobs said he was disturbed when he heard young entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley use the term “exit strategy” — a quick, lucrative sale of a start-up. It was a small ambition, Mr. Jobs said, instead of trying to build companies that last for decades, if not a century or more.
That was a sentiment, Mr. Jobs said, that he shared with his sometime luncheon companion, Andrew S. Grove, then the chief executive of Intel.
“There are builders and traders,” Mr. Grove said on Tuesday. “Steve Jobs is a builder.”

The bot looks like a little snowmobile to me and has tank treads on the bottom. It is designed to be interactive and has IR sensors all around. The steering for the device is done by tilting your iPhone or other iOS device.
It will be able to navigate mazes and will react to your hand movements as well. The surprising part of the toy is that it will sell for about $20. It will make its official debut at the Toy Fair in NYC next month and will hit stores in June in blue, green, orange, and black versions.
